Ah being fearless…sometimes it’s oh so difficult and then sometimes you just have to do it. And that is exactly what I’m about to do.  I’m about to blog.

About a year ago, I had something spark within me that I wanted to share our journey. I pushed it aside, giving into all those negative thoughts that crowd your head. But again and again the desire to share continued to grow. So here I am. I’m blogging. I don’t exactly know what blogging is going to look like for me, but all I know is that I have so much I want to share. This journey, I feel (and hope you will feel) is worth sharing. So I hope you’ll join me. It’s been a while in the making, but here we are!

It’s been five years since Shawn and I bought this farm. We weren’t certain at that time what we were going to do with 60 acres, but regardless we fell in love with this piece of run-down land and all the possibilities it held. Fast forward five years and here we are. It wasn’t exactly that easy, it’s been a lot of work…a tremendous amount of work actually, but that’s a story for another day. However, we look back on it all and are thankful for the past five years. For the lessons learned and for time well spent. And yes, even for the  struggles and the long, hard days, that have taught us, if anything, we want to homestead more than anything. This is our dream.

Although this is our fifth year raising animals and working on bringing the farm back, it wasn’t until 2014 that we named our farm and became Humble Farm.

So now in case you are wondering what exactly our current homestead looks like, allow me to give you a run down! We currently are in the midst of our busy season (also know as summer on PEI) raising 20 ducks, a flock of 50 organic laying hens, two sows, nine piglets, 240 meat chickens, 24 turkeys and a free-range flock of about 60 hens and roosters…oh and one cat who thinks she’s boss!  In addition, we keep a small garden for our family and a food orchard, consisting of apple, peach, plum, pear and cherry trees, as well as raspberry, haskap, black and red current and gogi berry bushes.

So here we are! We have ambitions to continue to grow the farm even more. This summer we begun work on our new garden with raised beds and it  will be fenced in eventually (sorry, chickens!). We’ve also added a few more cherry bushes to the food orchard, planted potatoes, started to raise turkeys for the first time and added our first Pekin ducklings and Australorp chicks.

It’s been a busy summer so far, but it’s been a good one! Life on the homestead is everything we dream of and more!
